Sydney Hearing Services is happy to announce that we are now providing full Auditory Processing Disorder Assessments.
Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) is a condition which can affect a child’s ability to process what they hear in a variety of different listening situations. It is also referred to as Central Auditory Processing Disorders (CAPD). Understanding speech in background noise is a commonly identified difficulty experienced by many children with APD.
For our testing procedures, we recommend the child be a minimum age of 7.5 years old. By this age, norms are available and there is reduced variability of results due to the immaturity in brain functions. Testing is typically scheduled for early in the day to reduce the risk of fatigue and is usually completed over 2 or 3 appointments (depending on the child’s concentration and age).
Sydney Hearing Services undertakes a number of assessments over the course of the child’s visits depending on each individual’s circumstances, with tests ranging up to 15 minutes long.
Following the completion of testing, a detailed reported will be provided. Feel free to contact the clinic for further details.

- Standard Hearing Assessment
- Including pure tone audiometry and speech audiometry to rule out any underlying hearing problems.
- Tympanometry
- Assesses the status of the middle ear system.
- Auditory Memory
- The Auditory Perception Skills Test (TAPS-3) is used to assess Auditory Memory including sequential and working memory. It is made up of several smaller subtests ranging from sentence to word memory.
- Attention Testing
- The BrainTrain IVA-2 Auditory and Visual Continuous Performance Test aims to measure both auditory and visual impulsivity and inattention via the use of a computer game.
- Binaural Integration
- Dichotic listening involves presenting 2 different stimuli for each ear simultaneously and integrating the information received.
- Temporal Resolution
- The test involves 2 stimuli separated by a variable gap in time and allows us to assess the speed at which sound can be processed by the child.
- Monaural Low-Redundancy Speech Tests
- This testing looks at the child’s ability to understand speech when information is missing from the stimuli (filtered speech).
- Temporal Sequencing
- Testing investigates the child’s ability to recognize patterns and ordering of non-verbal stimuli (ie intonation and stress).
- Listening in Spatialized Noise – Sentences Test (LiSN-S)
- The LiSN-S is used to assess the auditory skills of children who may be having difficulty listening to/ following speech in a classroom. They are required to repeat sentences presented through the headphones to assess their speech reception threshold for target sentences in competing speech distractors.
Following the completion of testing, a detailed reported will be provided. Feel free to contact the clinic for further details.
